I'm stuck in level 4 (the royal crypt). Maybe I entered the royal crypt too early. I didn't even think about the 'ragged parchment' and didn't check out the crypts to be opened with the levers. The only thing I did on the royal crypt section was summoning the guardian and nearly killing myself ; - ) I touched the telport pad and was moved to the dungeon level entrance once again.

Now the door / wall / whatever to the royal crypt cannot be entered and I don't have the key anymore (used it the first time I went in). Any suggestions?

And I assume you didn't save the game previously in case this would happen. I found this link. A "walkthrough" to the royal crypt. I haven't been there myself, so I can't say if any of it can help, but it's worth to look at I guess.

Yep, I know the walkthrough, I just put the 'expanded' version online a few days ago from the old darkstone forum. In my opinion this may be a bug (leaving the crypt too early prevents reentering). Guess I'll just have to restart then ; - )

Yea, some old games, like darkstone, has these bugs. It has really bugged me (lol) in some situations.

You have to do something in a specific order. For example A B C D E. Then if you accidently do it A C B D E, you can NEVER move on in the game and have to start over. There are A LOT of these things in darkstone unfortunately >_>

Oh well, all games have glitches. I'm sorry I couldn't help. I just looked, and there's not much left of darkstone on the net. Couldn't find anything :/

Its all the quest maker's fault - I think it was Foucter? Never ever use state machines that delete important items after using them!

Actually, in my defense; you are told by the Ghost not to touch the red "coffins".  Saving
first is usually a good idea before trying something you're told "not" to do.
Of course, this is a year late...

But won't the teleport pad on the left get you in again?

Whoa!  This topic is from way back!  But here is my response for future wonderings.

For the record, you were warned by the Ghost NOT to touch the coffins or bad things would happen.  It would have been wisdom to SAVE before doing anything foolhardy; then click on the coffin and see what happens.

The Key in question is not the problem because it is only used once.  What you can't see is that when a coffin is opened, an invisible barrier blocks the doorway so you can't escape your doom.  But... if the coffin is closed again, the barrier dissolves.  What happened above is that the coffin was opened, sealing the room, and that the exit teleporter was used to escape the monster.  In that instance, there is no way to get back into that chamber.  It's not bad coding, it's a poor choice by the player.

Now the question might be why I did it that way.  Well, when I playtested my own game, I found it very easy to open the coffin, run out the door, and shoot the monster down from a distance, thus negating the consequence of my action in ignoring the Ghost's warning.  So, I made it more binding, since you can't easily run away.  It's about choices you see.

L8r,

Foucter

Wow, I'm not the only one reading these old posts!! Thanks, Foucter for making this awesome quest!! I played the beta long looong ago and was really happy when i found the finished version! I've dabbled with the Quest Editor and statemachines and such so I KNOW all the hard work and thought that has gone into making this quest and the story is interesting too!! I've noticed the extra effort put in here as well such as no cheating by teleporting (my kids and I did that in many quests and especially in Elric's Legacy to get that 200+ ring!) I DO save before opening doors and coffins and I pay attention to what the NPCs are saying!!

Yeah, I still check in here a couple times a week.  I'm glad you had fun with Avenger.  It was an eight year labor of love that I was happy to have finished.

Yes, often teleporting is a bad thing in the Avenger, but there is one place that you have to teleport to get inside.  Only one.  8)

Thanks in advance but I'm badly stuck in level 21 and can't find the teleporter in the secret passage in 'vathal'...any hints?! And are the urns scattered all over the place or will I find them all in level 21?

(My thief and sorcerer are playing this while my warrior and priestess were playing the seven curses of uma!)

OK.  IIRC, There are urns at overland areas, Trees of Odoni, and the Valley of the Dead. Underground, you'll find them on levels 17, 18, and 21.

Did you find the book in the entry area of Level 21?  It tells the general location of the three major ones; click along the length of the wall to find the invisible entrance to the teleport pad.  The other one the book starts to mention is only an ethereal wall.  You can see the square room on the automap, and you can actually walk right through the wall to get to it.

Level 21 was a challenge to make.  I tried several different things, and finally decided to make every path a dead end; as in, you can only go so far before backtracking to take another path.  The final touch was to give every crypt it's own plaque, which had to be translated.  With each House having their own crypts the same shape, it helps to tell them apart for return trips to place the urns.

If you still can't find the teleport pad you're looking for... I'll have to pull out my maps.

Hey thanks, I did enter the square room finally but I can't see any teleport pad there, (I hope my game's not messed up or something). The game has become quite a challenge to play since entering Ormar and thanks for that hint about the urns; I'll go search the overland areas as I think I found the ones that were to be found in level 17. 18 and 21 and have placed them in their proper places! I am pacing myself playing this... and even took a few weeks break when it seemed I had been running around level 21 for hours!

Sorry!  You're not missing anything; there is no teleport pad in that location.  The secret is the wall itself.

Yes, do pace yourself.  Ormar is packed full of stuff to do, and it does up the challenge.  On the difficulty level: Ardyl is a 2, Marghor a 4, Ormar an 8, and Serkesh a 6.  All the monsters you face from here on out are custom, designed to give the player a challenge even on Novice, which is the base.

Did you find the Wizard Sanctum?

Do you mean the wizard sanctum on level 10? Yes, I found it and it was quite a treat and I liked reading all those books there and all those unique things and I'll say again that this whole quest is fantastic and I can see how it took you 8 years to build as so much thought and care have gone into it!! It really is enjoyable!! And I suppose I'll bring up the previous dialogues and reread those books as I don't exactly remember what I read but you reminded me of it! Both my sorceress and thief were new characters and they've both gone up quite a bit in experience!

Finding all the urns has become a pain though, I don't remember how many I've placed already but, I seem to have 4 missing.  I got the ones from the overland areas; are there more than 1 in level 18 as I'm still working on opening the various doors and have not finished that level yet?  I've found only 1 so far in level 18.

OK, urns...

One at Trees of Odoni,

One each inside the two crypts opened by the tombstone puzzle,

Two, no three, around the Summoning Forest (Level 17); one near the black portals, and two more around the edges of the large central chamber.

On Level 18, at least one on a Chamber bookshelf, and one at the sealed entrance to the Knight's Crypt.

And one tucked back beside the far right-hand bench as you enter the Paths of the Dead; the book is on the left, and the urn is on the right.

I think that's all nine.  Pretty sure it was nine; the HighKing's crypt which sits opposite the surface entrance to the Paths of the Dead gives the clue about the number, and what to do.

I really need to get back and finish Morgan's adventures!  8)

She's just starting Ormar.

Let me know when you reach Level 20. There's a small collision bug that I want you to avoid! 8)

I have been thinking about how to do that.  The site that I originally posted the Walkthrough is gone, along with my ability to easily update the topic.  Anyone who's read the portion on this site might have noticed that there's a section missing between the end of Level 3 and Level 4.  I had corrected this on the old site, but somehow it didn't make it here.
Currently I don't have a lot of options for picture and text intergrations that work well.  Considering using Word to make "web format" pdf documents, which displays a continuous page; no page breaks.
Maybe Mithrandir has some suggestions?  Or maybe clues as to what format would best work for dispaying them on this site?

Thanks again Foucter!! I'll go and hunt for the urns in a day or two and keep my progress posted and I'll watch out when I enter level 20!
