Whenever I try to click on my character's inventory while playing this quest, the game freezes on me!

Topic : Saves in GOG version

I know the original version I had is the EUR version since I have the original legit disc and it was released already patched to 1.0.5b.

[edit] GOG must use the US version of darkstone since the original versions save files can be changed yet the GOG's versions save files crash DSLooker.

"Darkstone must be installed and the characters.lpl and save games to patch must be in their proper folders for Chartrans, DSName and DSlooker to work.

If you have the US version, a hex editor is the only way to move save games to a different PC or re-use them after changing your computer's name in Windows. I like the free HxD from http://www.mh-nexus.de"

There were always two major versions ... 'US' and 'EUR' ... for each of them there were other patches / binaries. I guess GOG.com has the european version and your saves were from a american version of the game. But like I said, that's just a guess.

Wierd.... DSLooker tries to look at the new character's save file then crashes, yet works when looking at the old character.lpl file. yet it still get replaces with the new one that is generated everytime.

[edit] lol, after some messing around with the compatibility settings, found if you put it to 98/me it still has the DRM and asks for the disk. also found for me if i put it to xp I get the mouse clicks which i do not get with no compatibility (May be different for other people) [/edit]

[edit ver=2] just replaced the exe with the original game version and the save files and the character files load as usual so it must be in the gog's version of the .exe file. I do not understand how your version is not affected and loads ok????[/edit]

I cannot verify this behaviour. I copied a save from 2011 (from my 'EUR' Darkstone version patched to 1.5b) into the save folder and had no problems loading / playing / saving it.

Of course, the computer name hasn't changed since then...

So, I don't think the GOG.com version corrupts your files. There has to be some other problem.

Well just got the GOG version of darkstone and tries to use my old darkstone save file by using DSLooker.

DSLooker updates the files computer name but then when playing the GOG version, it deletes the save file and creates its own file.

It seems like the save files are not compaitble with each other so if you want to use an old save, you have to use the original version.

urrrrmmmm....... Just to let you know there are two types of IP addresses Public Ip addresses and private. Private are used due to NAT (Network Address translation) and PAT (Port Address translation) to try and sort out the limited number of V4 Ip addresses. Basically what i am trying to say is that IP address is useless unless you are on the same network. The Private Addresses are:

Class A: 10.X.X.X

Class B: 172.16.x.x - 172.31.x.x

Class C: 192.168.x.x

To find your IP address (Which is Dynamic unless you pay for a static address) use http://www.whatismyip.com/

[edit] I just read it back to myself, sorry if i sounded abit harsh. It wasn't suppose to come through like that. It was suppose to be informative anyway nice to see another new face in the forum Laughing [/edit]

GOG; that's where I found it.  In fact, I've not run into the game before gog!

DarkStone ranks high in my "missed this one on my first pass" list..  Despite the reduced detail, at least up-close, the game carries itself well, for a 13 year-old game.  I've not been able to stop.  Thanks for having such a great repository of quests; I can't wait for them to get thier turn.

Just wanted to say hi, and you'll see me around here for sure!

David

Alright folks, my problem has been fixed by reinstalling my motherboard sound drivers! Good luck to everyone who loves this awesome game! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who likes this game!

@ezzy9 Thanks for the suggestion, I have downloaded the CCCP too and  if reinstalling the sound drivers hadn't worked, I was ready to install it!

Apart from the movies, which i fixed, I have had no problems. This could possibly be fixed by getting additional codecs. (I recommend CCCP for any codec problems as it has it all: http://www.cccp-project.net/)

My hard disk that had a perfectly working installation of Darkstone 64 bit failed and now that I have installed it in my new hard disk, the sound is not working properly, it seems to be 'hiccuping', that is that the first few seconds of sound in the game keeps repeating itself... anyone else have this problem? If I can solve this problem myself, I'll post the solution here.

Fair point. I can't say I'm much of a worshipper in any case, as I only come back to the game for a few days every few months or so. I was just checking if the previous resources were still floating around somewhere in backup files or something. Thanks for the reply!

The 'Guide' / 'Wakthrough' was overtaken from the old forum.

It only reaches level 10 but of course Foucter has been answering any questions regarding the quest in the past, e.g. here. So maybe you could ask him if you are stuck anywhere...

As to the whole 'why isn't anyone interesed anymore' thing:

The game has gotten 'old' and it wasn't one with a 'huge' community to start with (unlike the Diablo series). There have been a shitload full of interesting games since Darkstone that evolved the online multiplayer thing to other levels. The gameplay itself wasn't that interesting to keep alive worshippers over decades. We can already have that from games like Torchlight or such...

Darkstone's uniqueness and charme cannot keep it in mind that long. It would be a different story if there would have been any sequel, but sadly there wasn't.

Fist of all, I'd like to thank Foucter for making such a brilliant (and at times devilishly difficult) quest, with guides to boot. But as the community of Darkstone continues to shrink, I can't find any of that sort of stuff anymore. So what happened to them after Just Another Community fell?

I'd love it if those resources could be brought back (the rest of the walkthrough which got to the 4th crystal, the clue/hint guide, and the secrets list) so that I and all the other silent ones could glean the information from them again (and have far greater hopes about actually completing The Avenger, hehe).

I have just tested it and it now works, but i had trouble with the video. i looked up the codec and it uses the Indeo 5 codec. i managed to re-enable this within CCCP (might have to do a guide to show people)

for people who do not want to edit the registry i have uploaded the registry file so you just have to double click it and it adds it for you.

Topic : Installing on 64bit

Well i didn't want to necro post in the old thread about 64bit installing so i created this one.

i have recently come across a post that may be help to all that want to install this on the 64bit machines (from the post it works on 64bit versions of xp, vista and 7)

I will give this a test later.

http://blog.nosilleg.com/2007/09/darkstone-on-windows-xp-x64-edition.html

There are now updated instructions for installing Darkstone on Windows 7.

Darkstone is an Action RPG released in 1999 that I've recently had a desire to play again. However, the installer refuses to work on Windows XP x64 Edition (and possibly Windows Vista x64, tho I haven't tried), so I figured out how to do a manual install and I'm going to document that here.

UPDATED: From the comments below, the game appears to run on all versions of Windows; Windows XP x64, Windows Vista x64, Windows 7 x64 and the 32 bit equivalents. Paths may vary between Windows editions, but shouldn't be too difficult to get correct.

I didn't have another install of Darkstone to work from, but most of the process is easy to guess and I've figured out enough of the rest so that the game appears to be fully functional.

  1. Copy everything from D:\Data\ into C:\Program Files (x86)\Delphine Software\Darkstone\.
  2. Copy D:\music.MTF into C:\Program Files (x86)\Delphine Software\Darkstone\.
  3. Copy D:\voices1.MTF into C:\Program Files (x86)\Delphine Software\Darkstone\.
  4. Copy everything from D:\mdata\ into C:\Program Files (x86)\Delphine Software\Darkstone\mdata\.
  5. In RegEdit make sure the following key chain exists HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Wow6432Node\ DelphineSoft\ Darkstone\ CurrentVersion\ Darkstone.
  6. Make two string values under that key of DataPath and SavingPath and set both values to C:\Program Files (x86)\Delphine Software\Darkstone\.

This should get Darkstone up and running and allow you update with all the patches.

I used Process Monitor to figure out the registry keys. There is an additional "language" key that Darkstone checks, but I don't know the values and the game defaults to English anyway, so I haven't worried about that. I'm sure someone with a real install of the game could provide accurate information, but this should at least get Darkstone running.
